Forgiveness of ourselves and others can be one of the most important tools in living a healthy and happy life. It is so easy to hold things against ourselves and others and it is a process to let things go. I think I have written on this before but for some reason I feel like I should address the issue again (also I can't find the post). Forgiveness is not easy but it can be done, below are a couple of tips to help you along the way.
1. Understand that you make mistakes too. Understanding and realizing that you are not perfect and you have been forgiven of your mistakes will help you with humility allowing you to forgive other people.
2. Understanding that forgiveness is not trust. Just because you decide to forgive someone for the mistakes that they have made against you doesn't mean that you allow them back into your life on the same level that they once had. You are allowed to pull back from someone based on betrayal.
3. Understand that forgiveness of yourself allows growth to take place. You can not hold things against yourself and forgive yourself at the some time. Some religions believe that guilt and shame keep you humble but I disagree guilt and shame is just that, guilt and shame. Letting go of guilty feelings in the attempt to be a better person is commendable. Release your guilt and shame in the hopes of being better is very freeing and you can do it.
You are so important and your spiritual and relational health matters. Try forgiving yourself and others this week and make the changes necessary to have the life that you desire internally. I believe in you and know you can do it.
